The beaches are genuinely quieter than anything on Antigua, Coral Group Bay gives you a different reef to snorkel, and the Frigate Bird Sanctuary in Codrington Lagoon is described by the national tourism authority as the largest frigate bird colony in the western hemisphere, home to more than 5,000 birds. None of that is exaggerated marketing copy from a tour operator; it's what the visitor authority itself says about the site.

The honest counterweight is time and cost. Two 90-minute crossings eat three hours of a single day, the round-trip fare runs $110 per adult before you've paid for a single Barbuda activity, and the ferry's own published schedule carries a note dating it to October 2024, so times can shift. If you have one full day in the Caribbean and want maximum snorkelling time, Cades Reef or Stingray City on Antigua itself will get you more water time for less money and less transit. If you have a full week and are already ticking off Antigua's main reefs, Barbuda is the day that makes the trip feel complete rather than repetitive.

A family of two adults and two school-age kids pays around $360 round trip before anything else on the island, which is worth weighing against the guided Barbuda day tour with lunch at $130 per person, since that price already bundles the crossing, guide and lunch rather than leaving you to arrange each piece. Barbuda Express (barbudaexpress.com) is the scheduled operator running this route; we haven't confirmed whether it's the only one, so don't take that as a claim. The crossing takes about 90 minutes, and baggage is limited to 2 pieces per fare-paying passenger plus a personal hand bag, with a surcharge for anything over that. Payment is taken in EC dollars, and Visa, MasterCard, Amex and Discover are all accepted at the dock.

The single most useful thing we can tell you: the departure point changed. As of 1 November 2023 the ferry leaves from Jolly Harbour Marina, boarding at the dock in front of the Sea Dream restaurant, not from St John's as a surprising number of third-party sites still claim. Always confirm the dock and the exact time when you book, since the operator's own schedule page carries a note dating it to October 2024. As published, the boat leaves Antigua Monday to Saturday at 06:30, with the Barbuda return at 09:00 on Monday and 15:00 Tuesday through Saturday; Sunday runs a single round trip, departing Antigua at 09:00 and Barbuda at 15:00. A cargo run leaves Crabbs, North Sound, on Wednesday and Friday at 12:00, which isn't the passenger service.

One more thing worth knowing before you book: Barbuda Express no longer runs its own day tours on the island. Its own site now points visitors to other operators for anything beyond the boat ride itself, so a ferry ticket gets you to Barbuda and back; the sightseeing, the frigate birds and the snorkelling are arranged separately, either on your own or through a packaged day trip like the guided Barbuda tour with lunch.

Barbuda's Pink Sand Beach is the headline reason most visitors make the crossing, a long, close to empty stretch of coast with a faint blush to the sand that Antigua's beaches don't have. Coral Group Bay is the reef most day tours snorkel, a calmer alternative to open-water sites, though we don't have a verified visibility figure for it any more than we do for Antigua's own reefs, so treat any specific number you read elsewhere with the same caution.

Codrington Lagoon National Park is the other half of the day. The same source calls it the largest frigate bird colony in the western hemisphere, with more than 5,000 frigate birds nesting there and around 100,000 birds across 170-plus species in the wider lagoon area. Males inflate a bright red throat pouch to attract mates, a sight most visitors come specifically to see.

We can't give you a nesting-season month range or a boat fee, because neither is officially published. Third-party guides mention a figure around $20 for the sea-taxi run, but that isn't confirmed, so the honest advice is to arrange the trip through the Codrington tourist office and ask the price when you book rather than budgeting off a number you read online, including this one.
